Today, the United States is known around the world as an independent world power that strives to lead the world in granting freedom and independence for all of it’s citizens. But our country’s first colonists had a much different experience than American’s do today. They had little control over the colonies themselves. The colonies were taxed randomly, and were given no representation in their government. As the colonists began to be greatly displeased with this situation they began a revolution that would bring about the creation of one of the most important documents in our country’s history. The original thirteen colonies were part of the British Empire and were immensely used for the cultivation and export of North America’s natural resources. As other countries began to realize the value of these British North American colonies, war broke out and the British Empire spent many years fighting to protect their control and possession of the colonies. Britain’s victory of the French and Indian War gave Parliament a sense of entitlement to control the colonies as well as a surmounting debt from the costs of the war. Parliament felt the finances that were used during these battles were to protect the colonies and they believed the colonists should begin to contribute more to maintain part of the British Empire. I. Introduction Martin Luther King Jr. was a United States clergyman and civil rights leader. He was a charismatic leader and an eloquent speaker, who preached nonviolent resistance to unjust laws and practices, a tactic he adopted from Indian leader Mohandas K. Gandhi. His civil rights efforts helped to bring about passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. In 1983, the U.S. Congress voted to make his birthday, January 15, a national holiday (celebrated on the third Monday of the month). King began his involvement in the modern civil rights movement in 1955 with leadership of the Montgomery (Alabama) bus boycott, which ended segregated seating on that city’s public buses. He then urged black Americans to follow the Montgomery example and win their rights through nonviolent protest. As head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which he helped to found in 1957, King led demonstrations, marches, sit-ins, and boycotts in many cities in both the South and the North, often meeting hostility and sometimes violence (Haskins, 2000). He was jailed several times in the South for his activities. In 1967, he also became a leader of the peace movement, seeking an end to the Vietnamese War. This paper scrutinizes the leadership qualities of Martin Luther King. II. Background A. EARLY LIFE Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta, the capital of the US state of Georgia, on January 15, 1929. His father, also called Martin, was a minister of the Christian religion and he passed on his faith to his son. When Martin was very young, his family was able to protect him from the injustices that black people suffered on a daily basis. Later, as he grew older, he realized the truth. His first school was for black children only, and in the streets and shops of Atlanta, all black people were treated as second-class citizens (Lincoln, 2000). B. A COLLEGE EDUCATION Martin Luther King was an excellent pupil, and at 15 years old he moved on to Morehouse College in Atlanta. There he decided that he wanted to be a preacher like his father. In 1948 he took up a place at Crozer Seminary in the state of Pennsylvania, far to the north. While at Crozer, Martin became interested in the ideas of the Indian leader Mohandas Gandhi. In particular, he began to share Gandhi’s view that people should not use violence to fight injustice. Martin also met Coretta Scott, a black woman from the Southern state of Alabama. The couple married in 1953, after Martin had left the seminary to study for a postgraduate degree at Boston University in Massachusetts (Haskins, 2000). III. Discussion A. THE MONTGOMERY BUS BOYCOTT In May 1954, Martin became preacher at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, and moved to the city with his wife. In the same year, the US Supreme Court ruled that segregated education was wrong. This was a great leap forward for black civil rights, but it was only the beginning. In Martin’s new home of Montgomery, all the buses had separate seats for black and white people. If there were no free seats when a white person got on a bus, the law said that a black person had to give up his or her seat. On December 1, 1955, a black passenger called Rosa Parks refused to stand up so that a white man could sit down. She was quickly arrested (Oates, 2002). Martin and other local black leaders were angry at this injustice, so organized a bus boycott. They asked all the black people of Montgomery to stop traveling by bus and, for over a year, most did. Finally, on December 20, 1956, the US Supreme Court ruled that the bus segregation laws were against the constitution and so illegal. B. ORGANIZING THE FIGHT In 1957, Martin Luther King and other leaders set up an organization called the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Its main aims were to end segregation, and to make it easier for black people to vote. The Constitution of the United States gave them this right, but the governments of many individual states, especially in the South, tried to stop them from voting. Over the next few years, Martin organized many strikes, marches and other protests. At the same time, he enjoyed a happy family life and by 1963 he had four children (Oates, 2002). C. A NEW ROLE? Martin did not give up his work. Instead, he began to think more about the injustice faced by black people in the northern states of the United States, and by other groups of people across the country, particularly the poor of all races. He also began to campaign against the war the Americans were fighting in Vietnam. Martin’s last great plan was to lead a Poor People’s March to Washington, D.C. On April 4, 1968, while he was visiting the city of Memphis in Tennessee, he was shot dead by an escaped criminal called James Earl Ray. Four days later, he was buried in Atlanta, Georgia (Lincoln, 2000). IV. Conclusion Martin Luther King Jr. has left a very notable reputation that even his own race cannot compare with his notable record as a man who brought changed in America’s society.  Ã‚   Martin Luther King, Jr. has truly contributed to the history of United States of America. Lipstick or Chapstick containers also work well. Make Solid Perfume Melt together the wax or petroleum jelly with the jojoba or sweet almond oil. You can either microwave the ingredients for a few seconds in a microwave-safe container or else you can heat the mixture over a double-boiler.Once this mixture has liquefied, remove it from heat. Stir in the essential oils. You can use a toothpick, straw or even a spoon. Since it was established, the company has taken consumer oriented hospitality culture that keeps customers coming for more.   McDonald is one of the companies which use a huge part of their revenues on customer service and advertisement in order to create good relationship with its customers. Like MacDonald, the company has a strong consumer oriented culture and although it does not have a customer service department, the employees have been well trained on customer service.   This has ensured the continued flow of customer to the small establishment in a competitive fast food market. At the same time, the company has adopted the right structure for its small operations. This structure ensures that there is strong control of the operation of the establishment by the management. Task 2 – Approaches to Management and Leadership Management approaches and how they can be implemented Management is one of the most important factions in the organization. Management involves playing key roles of planning and organizing the resources for the organization to lead it to achieve the set goals. Research has documented a correlation between the effectiveness of the management and the overall performance of the organization. There are different approaches to management depending on the kind of organization that one is dealing with (Haas and Wotruba 2003, p. 92).  Ã‚  Ã‚   One of the most common approaches to management is the project management.   This approach ahs been used for decades although it has been undergoing several changes in the recent past. Under this approach, the management takes the organization as a project that has specific goals and objectives to achieve. To implement this approach, the management has to understand the goals and objectives of the organization and then formulate the necessary plan that will lead the organization to achieve the set goals and objectives. Another common management approach is the Balanced score card approach. This is a strategic planning and management system which is widely used in business, government, non-profit organization, and in other organizations with an aim of aligning the acclivities of the business with the vision and the overall growth strategy.   This approach is also aimed at improving the internal and external communications and toe monitor the progress in the performance of the organization in light of the set goals. This management approach is also focused on the drivers for the future growth and performance of the organization.   To achieve this, the management prioritizes the projects or initiatives which are likely to assist the organization to achieve these goals.   In order to implement this approach, the management has to view organization from four different perspectives including the learning and growth perspective, the business process perspective, the customer perspective, and financial perspective (Haas and Wotruba 2003, p. 92). Operational change As the U.S economy recede, most companies have been forced to undergo operations changes which are meant to reduce the cost of operation to align with the changing economic condition. The U.S Automotive industry which is on its knees due to threats of bankruptcy has seen a number of players in the industry under various operational changes in order to reduce the cost of operation. With the large burden of meeting the high labor cost, General Motors is one of the companies which as restructured its operation in a number of ways in order to cut its cost. Although the changes have emanated from the economical factors which may be beyond the control of the company, it has result to massive layoff and closing down of its plants in order to reduce the cost of operation. However, this has not gone well with UAW which is the trade union representing automotive workers in the US. The issues for confrontation has been the agreement that were made earlier between the company and the worker and even in the current financial crisis, the UAW has refused to let the deal go. Apparently the company could have retained some of the labor force and lowered the rate of pay per hour. At this time we can say the company is in a crisis. Managing change during a crisis is one of the most difficult tasks for any organization. At the time of crisis the organization needs to have a strong leadership style that does not compromise on the need to bring the organization back to its feet. Therefore authoritative leadership should be used to manage the current restructuring taking place in Ford General Motors. Authoritative leadership would minimize the number of time the management ha s to engage with the employees and the unions since the union has failed to recognize the current financial situation of the company. Task 3 – Motivational Theories In the 20th century management, the organizational assets were the most important capital for an organization. However, this has drastically changed in the 21st century and employees have become the most important capital for any organization. A well motivated workforce  Ã‚   can help an organization to have a competitive edge in the market which other organizations may find difficult to replicate.  Ã‚   One of the most important factors in human resource management is to ensure the overall satisfaction of the employees.  Ã‚   The main duty of human resource management is to ensure that employees are represented in the management and their affairs are taken care of. Motivation of the employees is one of the human resource practices that have been shown to increase employee satisfaction and therefore low rate of employee turnover and higher retention. Different organizations have taken different approaches to employee motivation (Weightman 2008, p. 45).   Research has documented that  Ã‚   despite the varied methods of employees motivation, monetary incentives remains the most effective.   Employee motivation can be described using behavioral and social approach. According to the behavioral approach, the management needs to have a clear understanding of the employees including the incentives and rewards that are used to motivate employees in the company.   In this case the managers have a duty of identifying the specific behavior that need to be reinforced in employees. These may include outstanding performance of the employee, punctuality, neatness, accuracy in completion of tasks and others. Any employee who shows improvements in these behaviors need to be rewarded to reinforce the development of those positive behaviors. On the other hand, social approaches include the integration of the cognitive and the behavioral aspects.   This theory view motivation as a factor produced by two forces including the expectation of the individual to succeed at work and the need to gain vicarious experience. Once the management recognizes the individual expectations, then they should provide the approach environment that will help the individual employee to achieve these. According the Maslow hierarchy of needs, we have different needs in our life that has to be fulfilled. The Maslow hierarchy therefore assumes that there are those basic needs that have to be met for the employees to the motivated.   The Maslow hierarchy of needs can be used to categorize how employees have different needs that have to be met for them to be motivated (Weightman 2008, p. 45).   .   The Maslow hierarchy theory starts with the basic needs up to social need. At the bottom there is physiological needs, safety, social, esteem, and self actualization a the top This means that it is important to recognize the specific needs of the employee that has to be met first according their hierarchy of needs. According to this theory, there are some basic needs that have to be met and in our life, we struggle to meet these needs. This means that our quest in life is to climb up the Maslow hierarchy to meet these needs.   Therefore if such needs are not satisfied, then individual motivation will arise from to satisfy them.   In line with fulfillment of these needs, a business therefore needs to offer different incentives to the workers in order to fulfill the different need as they progress up the ladder. Another theory of motivation is the two factor theory of Hertzberg.   Also known as hygiene theory,  Ã‚   it emphasizes more on the factors in the working environment which causes satisfaction and dissatisfaction.   The following table lists the top six factors which cause dissatisfaction and the top six factors causing satisfaction. He argued that physiological needs or basic needs should be satisfied first while the other physiological needs should be satisfied later (Weightman 2008, p. 45).   . The implications of Hertzberg theory assert that the management should not only meet the hygiene factor to avoid the dissatisfaction of employees but they must also provide other factors which intrinsic to work in order to have satisfied employees. For example IBM, which is one of the most prosperous ICT companies in the world, has taken various strategies including flexible working schedules, pay per performance, and others in order to motivate their employees. The company takes an order from a client and allocates it to the worker who then works closely with the client to ensure that they meet all the technological challenges given by the client. Task 4 – Working with others, teamwork, groups and group dynamics Difference between teams and groups In many instances, we tend to use the work group and team interchangeably. However there are many differences between a tem and a group in the real application of the two.   In management we usually stress the importance of team building and not group building. This is because the strength of a team depends on the common purpose and the connectivity of the individual members. On the other hand, the strength of a group come the volume or the willingness to carry out the command given by the leader. In real application, it is very easy to form a group rather than a team. A group can be formed   by individuals of different   types and background but eventually it will be very difficult to achieve the commonality between the group members.   It is very difficult to build consensus in a group for a leader that it is in a team.   Unlike a group which is simple to form, a team is quite difficult to form.    The members of a team are not selected on the ground of commonality but on the ground of compatibility in different  Ã‚   complementary skills. For example a business team can be made up of an accountant, a salesman, secretary, and others.   Every member plays a different role but which are integrated to achieve a common goal. Unlike in a group, there is no room for conflicts in a team. The role of teams in a small and a big organization differs in some aspects although all the teams have the same role of achieving a set goal. However, teams in a small organization may be easier to form and evaluate and their process of work may be simpler due to the size of their operation. On the other hand, teams in a larger organization may take time to form since all members have to be consulted. Their process of work may be a bit difficult since they have a large operation to cover. Application of Tuckman and Jensen team development model Tuckman and Jensen present us with four stages which define group development.   Although the process can be subconscious, the four stages present the process which all groups go through in their formation. The first stage is the forming stage in which the individual behavior is defined by the desire to be accepted by other members of the team (McGrath and Tschan 2004, p. 61).   At this stage, serious issues, feelings, controversy, or conflict are usually avoided.   The individuals get more focused on adapting to their roles and gather information about others. The next stage is storming stage in which the group remains good to the other only when important issues are addressed.   There are minor confrontations which are dealt with or are ignored. These conflicts are related to work or relationship in the group.   The next stage is the norming stage in which the rules of engagement for the group member are established. At this stage, members understands the other well and the experience the efforts and experience of the other. However, individuals at this stage are resistance to change especially from outside for fear of group break up (McGrath and Tschan 2004, p. 61). The last stage is the performing stage which not many groups usually reach this stage.   This stage is characterized by interdependence and flexibility and every group member understand their role and trust each other. The group identity, loyalty and the performance are high as members become task oriented. How communication methods can affect team performance in a large multi national organization. Communication is one of the most important factors for optimum performance of an organization.   The communication process helps the organizations to pass important operation details from one department to the other. The communication structure in an organization is also very important since determines the flow of information from the management to the employees.   The  Ã‚   communication structure in an organization should ensure the smooth flow of information between the dyad in the work place. However, communication methods can affect team performance in multinational organizations. In most multinational organizations, the teams may be allocated to a certain function far away from the managements of the organization. This means that the team may be faced with the difficulty of enquiring important details regarding their duties from the management. At the same time, there is a high likelihood that the team will be made up of individuals using different languages. This means that the team will require an interpreter for it to function effectively (McGrath and Tschan 2004, p. 61). The three animals that seem to be the most prevalent in Mayan writings are the deer, iguana, and the quetzal bird. Defending Liberal Arts Essay

William Butler Yeats is accredited with once saying â€Å"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.† It seems this idiom no longer rings true; today’s preferred education encompasses the regurgitation of technical jargon in the hopes of finding a job. People now deem Liberal Arts degree worthless; it’s too expensive and impractical in today’s job market. The sciences and career colleges are where the jobs lie. In the battle over higher education, through his iconoclastic article â€Å"The New Liberal Arts,† Sanford J. Ungar stands as a lone crusader against an onslaught of â€Å"misperceptions.† I for one agree with and applaud his effort, although he could use some additional support in presenting some of his counter arguments. Unger first battles the misperception of the value in a liberal arts degree for first-generation, lower income college students; these degrees are for the elite upper-class. As Ungar’s imagined antagonists put it, â€Å"A liberal arts degree is a luxury that most families can no longer afford. ‘Career education’ is what we now must focus on† (191). Ungar contends that although skyrocketing tuition makes it increasingly difficult to pay for a college education it is now a more prudent investment than ever before (191). Continuing his crusade against naysayers by suggesting that â€Å"the career education bandwagon† (191) is not a smart investment, asserting that â€Å"It is far wiser for students to prepare for change—and the multiple careers they are likely to have—than to search for a single job track that might one day become a dead end.† (191) Ungar shows the pitfalls of having a narrowly focused education. Moreover, Ungar seems utterly disgusted with the notion that an education in the liberal arts is one for the upper class, the rich and the privileged; those who are not of this stratification are better suited implementing the ideas of the elite, not coming up with ideas of their own (192). He brands these accusations as â€Å"condescending† (192) and â€Å"prejudice† (193) and rejects the idea that the lower-class’ only duty is to implement the ideas of the upper-class. I believe that Ungar is correct on these assertions; however, Ungar’s argument would be better served if he acquiesced to the fact that a college education, much less one in the liberal arts, is not right for everyone. Higher education is not a one size fits all discipline. There has to be some to fill the factories, work the land, pave the roads and power the service industry. Unger is accurate in saying that the liberal arts should be available to everyone and everyone could benefit from this type of classical education; nonetheless not everyone is suited for such an education. The misperception that the liberal arts are for the elite is one that has been heard before but not nearly as much as the old â€Å"employers do not want to hire people with useless degrees† line which Unger obliterates with his next argument. Ungar continues his defense of a liberal arts education by refuting the claim that employers no longer hire someone with a â€Å"useless† degree, such as French. Showing how not only a specific degree such as a foreign language is one that is wanted by employers but the usefulness of other liberal arts degrees, emphasizing â€Å"A 2009 survey for the Association of American Colleges and Universities actually found that more than three-quarters of our nation’s employers recommend that college-bound students pursue a ‘liberal education.’† (192) Ungar deals with this common misconception methodically by first stating â€Å"what people believe† and then contesting that belief with facts diversified with his own opinions. Although he is correct and he brandishes documented facts to back up his assertions Ungar may have missed the mark by not including actual job numbers. By displaying irrefutable proof that those who have a liberal arts degree are more likely to get a job in any field and by showing those jobs are more lucrative for degree holders than those who are not, Ungar could put the nail in the coffin naysayers. For his next dose of perception breaking, Ungar skirmishes with the following idea: Liberal arts degrees are antiquated, the Sciences and Career colleges are where the smart money is, and the STEM fields are much better suited for today’s economic reality. Ungar contests this misperception by showing that a degree in liberal arts also includes the sciences. He illustrates that a traditional liberal arts degree includes the sciences: â€Å"the historical basis of a liberal education is in the classical artes liberales, comprising the trivium (grammar, logic, and rhetoric) and the quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music)† (193). Many of Ungar’s points are valid; his handling of this misperception is deft and detailed. However, I feel that Ungar is stretching with his response to this argument. Although a liberal arts degree does offer some glimpses into the STEM disciplines, it is not comparable to a degree in those specialties. A student wishing to become a chemist would not be well served pursuing a degree in History. In showing that these misperceptions are just that, Sanford Ungar single-handedly makes the case for a classical liberal arts education. He does a wonderful job tackling the misperceptions being thrown around today about a college degree in the liberal arts. He takes each one of these common misconceptions and thoroughly disproves each claim skillfully and without hesitation. By doing so he reopens the door to higher education. Perhaps if he and others like him continue to confront the onslaught of misinformation doled out upon the masses we can return to a world where a traditional liberal arts education is once again commended and no longer forsworn. Religion and Irish Society Essay

Religion and Irish society Ireland has long been recognised as a country whose culture, laws and way of life are predominantly influenced by its heavy catholic ethos. The passing of both the civil partnerships bill and the divorce referendum, the growing number of non denominational ‘educate together’ schools and the ready availability of contraception in recent years are all excellent examples of how our country is evolving to become on a par with our international counterparts. There can be no argueing that our generation are growing up in a much more diverse and open minded society that that of our parents. However, the arguably oppressive values of the Catholic Church are still widely enforced and adhered to in many aspects of our society. At the tender age of four it is thus that as a child living in Ireland, one would be enrolled into a catholic national school. With educate together schools only dotted around the country, making up on 58 of the 3300 primary schools; this is largely due to the fact that there is no other convinient or in fact possible option for parents. Having attended a catholic national school from 1996 until 2004, my experience of the teaching of religion was not one which explained to me the wide range of religions that prevail worldwide, or indeed the possibility of choosing not to follow one. Class masses and visits from the parish priest were regular. The control that the Catholic Church has over what is and isn’t taught in secondary school is however something I feel to be a more serious and pressing issue. It is only in recent years that health education classes have been allowed to address the issue of contraception with teens, an issue of the upmost importance concerning health. It is still required that teachers make it clear that the roman catholic church does not allow protected sex or sex prior to marriage. The divorce referendum which took place in Ireland in 1995 was subject to worldwide media coverage. Having been so famous for its rock solid catholic values, the idea that we would allow the religious sacrament of marriage to be reverted was one that not everyone could grasp. The rejection of this bill in the tenth amendment of the constitution in 1986 made this all the more controversial. This was not refined to outside of our borders either – with the bill passing by a miniscule margin of only 9,114 votes out of 1. 62 million cast, 50. 3% for versus 49. % against. The passing of this bill was enormous – a clear indication of just how many people were becoming increasingly comfortable with turning away from their catholic upbringing in favour of what they themselves considered to be a pro-people constitution. So whilst there can be no doubt that Ireland has come on in leaps and bounds in recent time, we still have a long way to if we are truly determined to instil an o pen mind upon this country, making sure that we allow our population to grow and develop in its own right, Independent from.

Some countries consider tourism as a source of income and government revenues in addition to agriculture and industry or even oil and gas products. This report describes the important and major role tourism plays in the macroeconomic and microeconomic of some countries. This report also gives a brief account about tourism and microeconomics in the UAE, and the plans which include strategic objectives to closely connect tourism with micro businesses, demand, supply and local services as well as recreational facilities. Many countries, especially some developing countries like Caribbean countries, Kenya, Tunisia, Indonesia, Thailand and Egypt have tourism as the main income for local development, foreign currency, and poverty reduction and for economic growth. They invest on tourism considering it as their major industry. They ave it as a remedy for local economic development and to solve problems like unemployment. In this way they generate higher income for the local economic circuit, for individuals like taxi drivers, storeowners etc. , and for hotels, restaurants and local firms To attract tourists such countries build the required infrastructure like hotels, resorts, communication, roads, parks and other recreational facilities, which in turn aff ects demand and supply of many commodities. Moreover, â€Å"Community support is important for tourism, as it is an activity that affects the entire community. Tourism businesses depend extensively on each other as well as on other businesses, government and residents of the local community. Economic benefits and costs of tourism reach everyone in the region in one way or another. † In countries that depend on tourism as number one industry, tourism economy affects their, policy, strategic decisions and planning as it may reflect on the whole of its community and microeconomic. In addition to the plans for building the suitable infrastructure, they have to conduct economic impact studies, analysis and assessment to support decisions related to tourism. They have to know the contribution of tourism to the economy of the country, the government income from taxes and fees and whether the revenues of tourism will cover the cost of services in addition to making sufficient profits. They also have to conduct environmental impact assessment in order to know the effects on social, cultural, microeconomic, biological, physical, and ecological systems. Tourism microeconomic impact studies are vital for countries which depend on tourism industry as the main income. The studies and analysis will answer many questions that affect policies, planning and strategic decision making as well as actions to encourage tourism activity. The results of the studies include the amounts of money tourists spend, the portion of sales by local businesses, the income tourism generates for households and micro businesses, the jobs tourism support and taxes that are generated by tourism. It is worth mentioning that not only poor countries pay attention to the importance of tourism. There are some rich countries that care about tourism. United Arab Emirates is a good example. Although they have sufficient revenues from oil and gas exports but at the same time they have long term plans to promote tourism. They â€Å"made significant investments to diversify beyond oil production and enhance the quality of its business environment. † There are â€Å"numerous world-class development projects throughout the UAE especially in Abu Dhabi and Dubai – from new luxury hotels, resorts, leisure attractions and shopping malls, to low, mid and high-income residential communities – that dramatically attracts visitors. For example in Abu Dhabi â€Å"Saadiyat Island is undergoing remarkable transformation that will become a world-class leisure, residential, business and cultural hub. Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District will house the world’s largest single concentration of premier cultural assets, including the Lord Norman Foster-designed Zayed National Museum, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Frank Gehr y-conceived Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. A performing arts centre and a maritime museum will add to the portfolio of leading cultural institutions. There will be also Manarat Al Saadiyat, Monte Carlo Beach Club, Mesopotamia exhibition, Beach Golf Club, Zayed National Museum. Another interesting and entertaining place is Yas Island which includes Marina Circuit, Yacht Club, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and many more interesting places. Such projects enhance the microeconomic in UAE. Moreover, in Dubai there are many projects that attract visitors which in turn encourage tourism and increase expenditure. The main efforts are made by Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The present UAE’s clusters support the infrastructure investments, and the attraction of outside companies and foreign manpower. In spite of the remarkable efforts made by the experts and the departments of UAE overnment, the success in making clusters is still not comprehensive, but The UAE is still better in cluster-based economic variations than some other oil-dependent economies. The building of better, more developed and sustainable clusters is still important for UAE government. Competitiveness in the Regions Economic performance of each country is deferent. Local policies and investments may help all countries i n the region make much more efforts in competitiveness. Artificial Intelligence for the elderly How AAA is being created to aid the elderly September 16, 2013 Christine ruff INFANT, Instructor: Sherry Soothers Artificial Intelligence can help keep our elderly out of our 16,000 overcrowded and under staffed nursing homes. In this paper I will discuss how AAA is being created to aid in the care of our elderly. I will also provide some amazing, staggering statistics and on how Artificial Intelligence is now and will provide this care in the very near future. Artificial Intelligence the theory and the development of computer systems able o perform tasks that are normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception. Speech recognition, decision making, and translation between languages. John McCarthy created the term Artificial Intelligence in 1956 and was a well- regarded professor of emeritus computer science at Stanford University for a large part of his professional career. Not only did he coin the term, but he continued to explain the field for more than 50 years. In a conference at Dartmouth he wrote the study is to proceed on the basis of the conjuncture that every aspect of learning or NY other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it. This was a huge milestone for computer science. In 1958 he invented the computer language known as LISP which is still used today. Another way AAA is making changes in our Healthcare is with Robots. Robots will be, in the near future a huge part of our Healthcare. Later I will explain the impact Artificial Intelligence and Robotics will have on our elderly. Robotic Surgery is a type of surgery that gives the surgeon the ability to perform a growing number of complex procedures using AAA computer like the Deviance S I This system allows surgeons to operate more adjectively and efficiently. This robot has two parts that are connected . The 1st part (the Tower) is place above the patient during surgery and with 3 of its 4 arms ,can hold a number of different surgical instruments and the 4th arm holds a ad-high -defy. Amerada. The console (the 2nd part) is where the surgeons sits and operates the arms while looking through a stereoscopic monitor which provide a ad view of the surgical site. Using biotic surgery allows the patients a faster recovery with less pain and minimal blood loss during surgery. Today in Europe there are trials with a robot called Hector which is part of the C ompanionable project run by a Professor ATT Baddie of the University of Reading in the I-J. This project integrates mobile assisted robot (hector) with a smart home e to better support elderly living at home. This err project is in its final stages in Holland and Belgium with elderly people. We hope Hector will help people stay independent for longer, receive care in their own homes and avoid unplanned capital admission(Professor ATT Baddie @ the university of Reading in the KICK). Len June of 2012 the final trials and demo for Hector, the Companionable Robot, where taking place. Hector is one way AAA can assist the elderly. Some of the care support Hector provides are memoir service, for an example . Reminders for taking medication on time, fall detection capabilities. Hector can help with falls by helping the remote control center asses how serious the fall is and what kind of emergency help is needed. This AAA robot offers solutions to suit various home setting to support assisted independent living. Artificial Intelligence will allow our elderly to stay in their homes longer instead of giving up everything they own to live in an over-crowded and under staffed nursing home that cost too much only to end up with additional costly medical conditions (such as bedsores, dehydration, falls and abuse),which can be avoided with the proper care and attention. The need for AAA in elderly care; As Americans get older and live longer so does the need for better more efficient Healthcare. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, over 13. % of the population is an older American (65+) and about 29% (1 1. Million) of the institutionalized older persons live alone. By the year 2030 there will be approve 72,1 million, that is 2 times their number in the year 2000. This brings the possibility of accidental falls up, and the chance of being place in a nursing home up as well. In 2007 there where a estimated . 4 million elderly living in nursing homes , 90% of which were too understaffed and over-crowded to provide adequate care. With all the early Baby boomers reaching the age of 58 to 67, there will be a demand or quality Healthcare and nursing homes shortly thereafter. An estimated 3. 3 million Americans will live in the nations 16,000 nursing homes during 2013. Which meaner 1 and 7 people ages 65 and up and more than 1 and 5 of those 85+ and older ,http:// healthiness. In April tot 2 3 the US DISH released a report, The US Nursing Workforce: Trends in Supply and Education that states that in forgot every 100,000 people there were only 920. Runs and for every 100. 000 people there were only 225. 0 Lips. These are Just a few of the statistics. Which brings me back to the reason we should employ Artificial Intelligence in our elderly homes to ensure a better quality of life. Hector the robot companion along with a smart home environment, elderly patients would have help in their homes which would relieve some of the help needed by family and nursing staff. Having AAA robots along with the smart home would prevent, over medication, give medications reminders, and give around the clock companionship and prevision . AI robots would also provide memory training, motivation suggestions and fall detection along with support. Ai would also help to keep our 16,000 nursing homes from continuously becoming over-crowded and understaffed. Artificial Intelligence would also help to lower the risk of abuse and neglect, because the elderly would be able to stay in their homes therefore the threat of abuse and neglect is no longer an issue. Neglect and abuse is caused by these facilities becoming desperate to fill the needed positions that some have overlooked criminal cords and under qualified applicants. Low pay and high turnover rate also makes it hard to properly train staff in the proper procedures needed to prevent bed sores, dehydration, over medicating and not giving the patient his or her medication at all. These all can be averted by implementing Artificial Intelligence such as HECTOR. PROS and CONS; Nursing homes, The biggest pro to having nurses is the personal care is they provide, which is vital to anyones recovery. A Nurse would be able to react to an emergency more quickly that a robot because of the physical training like CPRM. And finally employment of nurses will help keep the personal touch and our economy will also benefit with less unemployment. The cons to having nurses would have to be the inability to remain with the patient at all times, which can open the doors to falls, bed sores and other preventable deaths.
